Caribbean Princess Update
Caribbean Princess experienced a problem with the port propulsion motor which necessitated the ship returning to San Juan yesterday to evaluate the situation. After further review by technical experts, we have confirmed the full extent of the damage to the motor. We now know the time and work required to make the repairs and we regret that we need to cancel the next two voyages, departing March 18 and March 25.Cancelling a cruise is not a decision we take lightly, and we sincerely apologize to our affected passengers for the disappointment this causes.
Passengers booked on these sailings will receive a full refund as well as a 25% credit towards a future cruise. Those who booked their flights through Princess will receive a full refund or a future air credit based on the type of air purchased. Passengers who booked their air independently can submit their air change fees to Princess for a refund. We will also refund any transfers, pre- and post-hotel packages and government fees and taxes.
Passengers are currently being notified with these details.
The next Caribbean Princess cruise is scheduled to depart from San Juan on April 1.

Crews have begun efforts to extract the half million gallons of fuel still stored in tanks on the "Costa Concordia" (pictured) after the ship wrecked off the coast of Tuscany almost a month ago. While the fuel removal process should take about four weeks, it could take up to 10 months before the ship itself is removed.

CruiseCritic.com reports that Royal Caribbean confirmed that 13 passengers on the "Serenade of the Seas" (pictured) were involved in an accident last Friday during a ship-sponsored shore excursion in St. Thomas. Their open-air "safari cab" went down an embankment and struck a parked vehicle. Twelve of the 13 passengers continued on the cruise, while the last passenger (who suffered a broken hip) remained in St. Thomas. The line is paying the passengers' medical expenses and will offer them additional compensation.

Costa Cruises will send its ship "Costa Romantica" (pictured) into drydock in Genoa in late October for a three-month, $127 million makeover. The vessel will receive 111 new cabins (bringing its capacity to 1,808 passengers), private balconies on 120 cabins, and new areas such as a show lounge bar with a dance floor, a cabaret, a nightclub, a wine car, and a coffee/dessert bar. The ship will be renamed "Costa NeoRomantica" after the refurbishments. Once it leaves drydock at the end of January, it will operate 11-day sailings in the Canary Islands from Savona (Italy) before moving to northern Europe next summer for two-week voyages.

Change to Onboard Smoking Policy
As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring that every passenger has a comfortable onboard experience, Princess Cruises will be introducing more restrictive smoking policies, and will prohibit smoking in passenger staterooms and balconies for all voyages departing after January 15, 2012.Countries around the world from North America to Europe are moving to more restrictive smoking policies and our latest consumer studies show that smokers are a small minority of our passengers. In fact, the vast majority of cruisers value having their primary living space (both stateroom and balcony) smoke-free. As you know, balconies are a hallmark of Princess Cruises and we believe it is important to keep this peaceful space clear of smoke. Violations to this policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the passenger's stateroom account. Keeping with the global trend and honoring the wishes of our passengers, we feel this change will enhance our onboard experience and do more to help our passengers escape completely.
Of course we still welcome passengers who smoke, and will continue to provide convenient smoking areas throughout each ship, including cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub and casino, and a portion of the open decks.

The first webisode is "Celebrity Silhouette Style," featuring Dan Hanrahan (the line's president and CEO) taking viewers on a tour of Celebrity's newest ship at its shipyard in Germany. New webisodes will be released twice a month. You'll find the videos at www.celebritycruiseschannel.com, and you can embed them into your own web site by starting the video, clicking "pause" and then "embed," and copying the HTML code that pops up for inserting into your own site.

Norwegian Cruise Line canceled the upcoming winter season for the "Norwegian Jade" in the eastern Mediterranean. The ship will go into drydock in November before moving to Barcelona to operate nine-night Canary Island voyages. Fifteen sailings on the ship will be canceled this fall as a result of this decision, which NCL attributes to concerns from cruisers about port calls such as Egypt (the site of recent uprisings). NCL says the ship will return to the Holy Land next year.

It features deluxe staterooms and Panorama Suites with views 30 percent larger than other European river cruise vessels.

Carnival Cruise Lines confirms its ship "Carnival Pride" (pictured) was held overnight in Port Canaveral last night to repair anchor system damage resulting from a strong wind gust late Wednesday afternoon. The ship was docked there as part of its current seven-night cruise from Baltimore when strong winds began blowing the ship away from the dock. The captain released the anchor (standard operating procedures in such situations), but the sudden drop damaged the system that controls the anchor, requiring repairs in Port Canaveral that evening. The ship departed early yesterday, about 12 hours behind schedule, forcing the cancellation of the planned call in Nassau. The ship went to Freeport yesterday instead, and passengers were given a $25 onboard credit. Carnival
