    Caribbean Princess Update

Caribbean Princess experienced a problem with the port propulsion motor which necessitated the ship returning to San Juan yesterday to evaluate the situation. After further review by technical experts, we have confirmed the full extent of the damage to the motor. We now know the time and work required to make the repairs and we regret that we need to cancel the next two voyages, departing March 18 and March 25.

Cancelling a cruise is not a decision we take lightly, and we sincerely apologize to our affected passengers for the disappointment this causes.

Passengers booked on these sailings will receive a full refund as well as a 25% credit towards a future cruise. Those who booked their flights through Princess will receive a full refund or a future air credit based on the type of air purchased. Passengers who booked their air independently can submit their air change fees to Princess for a refund. We will also refund any transfers, pre- and post-hotel packages and government fees and taxes.

Passengers are currently being notified with these details.

The next Caribbean Princess cruise is scheduled to depart from San Juan on April 1.

Crews have begun efforts to extract the half million gallons of fuel still stored in tanks on the "Costa Concordia" (pictured) after the ship wrecked off the coast of Tuscany almost a month ago. While the fuel removal process should take about four weeks, it could take up to 10 months before the ship itself is removed.

CruiseCritic.com reports that Royal Caribbean  confirmed that 13 passengers on the "Serenade of the Seas" (pictured) were involved in an accident last Friday during a ship-sponsored shore excursion in St. Thomas. Their open-air "safari cab" went down an embankment and struck a parked vehicle. Twelve of the 13 passengers continued on the cruise, while the last passenger (who suffered a broken hip) remained in St. Thomas. The line is paying the passengers' medical expenses and will offer them additional compensation.

Costa Cruises has now canceled its port calls in Egypt and Tunisia through 2012. The line had initially canceled stops there through 2011, but it's decided to extend the cancellations through next year. (The only exception is the "Costa Voyager" [depicted here], which will join Costa's fleet in November to operate Red Sea voyages with calls in three Egyptian cities: Safaga, Sharm el Sheikh, and Sokhna.)

Norwegian Cruise Line  will introduce a new rule next January prohibiting smoking in cabins. Passengers will still be allowed to smoke cigarettes on their balconies, but not cigars or pipes. Also, they'll still be able to light up (cigarettes, pipes, and cigars) on open decks or in outdoor public spaces, based on signage in those areas.

The vessel will receive 111 new cabins (bringing its capacity to 1,808 passengers), private balconies on 120 cabins, and new areas such as a show lounge bar with a dance floor, a cabaret, a nightclub, a wine car, and a coffee/dessert bar. Carnival Corp. ordered three new vessels for two of its brands: two 3,250-passenger ships for AIDA Cruises (based in Germany) and one 3,700-passenger ship for Costa Cruises (an OSSN supplier member!). The Costa vessel will debut in October 2014 to replace capacity lost with some of the line's older ships (e.g., the "Costa Marina" will leave the fleet this November). Princess Cruises – escape completely®

    June 15, 2011

    Change to Onboard Smoking Policy

As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring that every passenger has a comfortable onboard experience, Princess Cruises will be introducing more restrictive smoking policies, and will prohibit smoking in passenger staterooms and balconies for all voyages departing after January 15, 2012.

Countries around the world from North America to Europe are moving to more restrictive smoking policies and our latest consumer studies show that smokers are a small minority of our passengers. In fact, the vast majority of cruisers value having their primary living space (both stateroom and balcony) smoke-free. As you know, balconies are a hallmark of Princess Cruises and we believe it is important to keep this peaceful space clear of smoke. Violations to this policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the passenger's stateroom account. Keeping with the global trend and honoring the wishes of our passengers, we feel this change will enhance our onboard experience and do more to help our passengers escape completely.

Of course we still welcome passengers who smoke, and will continue to provide convenient smoking areas throughout each ship, including cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub and casino, and a portion of the open decks.

The ship will go into drydock in November before moving to Barcelona to operate nine-night Canary Island voyages. Fifteen sailings on the ship will be canceled this fall as a result of this decision, which NCL attributes to concerns from cruisers about port calls such as Egypt (the site of recent uprisings). Disney will unveil new homeports in New York City and Seattle next year for Disney Cruise Line (along with Galveston, as previously announced). In 2012, the line will operate the "Disney Magic" from New York City and Galveston, the "Disney Wonder" from Seattle (instead of using Vancouver for Alaska sailings) and Los Angeles, and the "Disney Dream" and the "Disney Fantasy" (debuting next March) from Port Canaveral. It will also introduce its first-ever sailings to Canada, Hawaii, and the U.S. Pacific Coast. Next year means all Disney Cruise Line ships will sail in Caribbean or North American waters, with no Europe routes

Carnival Cruise Lines  confirms its ship "Carnival Pride" (pictured) was held overnight in Port Canaveral last night to repair anchor system damage resulting from a strong wind gust late Wednesday afternoon. The ship was docked there as part of its current seven-night cruise from Baltimore when strong winds began blowing the ship away from the dock. The captain released the anchor (standard operating procedures in such situations), but the sudden drop damaged the system that controls the anchor, requiring repairs in Port Canaveral that evening. The ship departed early yesterday, about 12 hours behind schedule, forcing the cancellation of the planned call in Nassau. The ship went to Freeport yesterday instead, and passengers were given a $25 onboard credit.

Royal Caribbean  will return its ship "Freedom of the Seas" (pictured) to service this week after a weeklong drydock session in the Bahamas. The ship received several Oasis-class upgrades, including a Cupcake Cupboard specialty bakery, a Vintages wine lounge, a new Britto Gallery art lounge, and upgraded entertainment and technology systems. The "Radiance of the Seas" will receive similar enhancements in May, followed by the "Splendour of the Seas" in October.

Carnival Cruise Lines reports that its new ship, the 3,690-passenger "Carnival Magic" (depicted here), successfully finished its sea trials in the Adriatic Sea to test its mechanical and navigation systems. The ship is now receiving the final interior finishes before it's delivered to Carnival in late April (before its May 1 debut in Europe). After its inaugural Mediterranean season this summer and fall, the ship will move to Galveston in mid-November to operate seven-day Caribbean voyages.

Princess Cruises  has canceled its scheduled port calls in Japan through May aboard the "Diamond Princess" (which will substitute Busan, South Korea, for Nagasaki) and the "Sun Princess" (which will now stop in Busan and Tianjin [China] and use days at sea instead of stops in Iwo Jima, Nagasaki, Osaka, and Yokohama). However, the "Ocean Princess" will keep its planned April 15 stop in Okinawa. CruiseCritic.com offers this helpful summary of the recent changes in Japan port call schedules for major cruise lines.
