Norwegian Cruise Line announced yesterday that famed pop artist Peter Max (pictured) will design the hull for its new ship "Project Breakaway" that will debut in May 2013. It also confirmed that the vessel will be based in New York City's Manhattan Cruise Terminal (replacing the "Norwegian Star"), making it the largest cruise ship ever homeported year-round in the Big Apple.

Norwegian Jewel will return to New York early on Saturday, August 27 and guests currently on board will disembark beginning at 6 am. Embarkation for the August 27 cruise will commence earlier beginning at 10 am. The ship will depart three hours earlier than scheduled at 1 pm. All guests are advised to arrive at the pier between 10 am and noon. Once the ship is underway, there may be a change to the scheduled Bahamas & Florida itinerary.
Norwegian Gem will remain at sea, keeping a safe distance from the storm, on Sunday, August 28 instead of returning to New York as scheduled. The ship will arrive in New York at 8 am on Monday, August 29. All guests for the August 28 cruise are asked to arrive at the pier on Monday, August 29 beginning at noon. The ship is scheduled to depart New York at 4 pm on Monday en route to Bermuda.
Norwegian Dawn is sailing from Boston to Bermuda today as scheduled.
Norwegian Sky is sailing from Miami today as scheduled. The ship will spend a day at sea on Saturday, August 27 instead of calling at Great Strirrup Cay, Bahamas. The ship will visit Nassau as scheduled on Sunday, August 28.
Guests on board the vessels will be kept up to date by the ship's Captain. It is also important to note that we will continue to closely monitor the storm and if the path changes, we may need to modify these itineraries.

Norwegian Cruise Line will introduce a new rule next January prohibiting smoking in cabins. Passengers will still be allowed to smoke cigarettes on their balconies, but not cigars or pipes. Also, they'll still be able to light up (cigarettes, pipes, and cigars) on open decks or in outdoor public spaces, based on signage in those areas.

Norwegian Cruise Line will introduce a $3.95 room service fee for orders placed between 12 midnight and 5 a.m. The 24-hour diners on the ships (Blue Lagoon or O'Sheehan's) will remain free of surcharges. In other news, NCL is expanding its popular around-the-clock pizza delivery service from the "Norwegian Epic" to all of its ships ($5 per 16-inch pizza). These new policies take effect this month on NCL's eight ships sailing from U.S. ports and next month on NCL's two ships in Europe ("Norwegian Jade" and "Norwegian Sun").

Norwegian Cruise Line canceled the upcoming winter season for the "Norwegian Jade" in the eastern Mediterranean. The ship will go into drydock in November before moving to Barcelona to operate nine-night Canary Island voyages. Fifteen sailings on the ship will be canceled this fall as a result of this decision, which NCL attributes to concerns from cruisers about port calls such as Egypt (the site of recent uprisings). NCL says the ship will return to the Holy Land next year.
